Sauna Kit or Build Your Own? What We Learned Before We Chose

Short answer: For most people building an outdoor electric sauna, a kit and a from scratch end up costing about the same once electrical work, insulation, and vapor barrier are factored in. The kit wins on time and predictability. A scratch build wins on customization. We're handy, we priced out both, and we still chose a kit.

What a sauna kit actually includes

A kit ships as pre-cut panels, framing, benches, door, hardware, and instructions. You provide the tools, the labor, and the foundation. Assembly is usually a weekend or two for an outdoor build, longer if you're also pouring a pad or running new electrical.

What a kit does not include, almost universally: the electrical run from your panel to the sauna, and often the foundation or pad itself. Those get quoted separately, and they're the same cost regardless of what's inside the walls.

Kit quality varies more than the marketing suggests. Wall construction is the thing to check closely. If you're building somewhere cold, ask specifically about wall thickness and whether there's a true insulation layer behind the interior boards, not just cedar on cedar.

What building from scratch actually requires

A scratch build gives you real control: bench height, window placement, door swing, room shape that fits an odd corner of the yard. You're sourcing kiln-dried cedar or thermo-spruce yourself, building a vapor barrier correctly (this is the step most DIY failures trace back to), insulating, and framing to your own dimensions.

None of that is beyond a handy person. The two places scratch builds go wrong are the vapor barrier placed on the wrong side of the insulation, moisture gets trapped in the wall and the sauna smells musty within a season and heater sizing, which needs to match cubic footage and wall material precisely or the sauna never gets properly hot.

The other real cost of scratch building is time. Where a kit is a weekend or two, a scratch build is typically several weekends spread over one to three weeks, longer if you're also learning as you go.

The electrical work is the same either way

This is the part that surprised us most in the pricing. Every electric sauna heater, kit or scratch-built, needs a dedicated 240V circuit run from the breaker panel. This is not a DIY step. It requires a licensed electrician regardless of how confident you are with a drill.

Typical cost is $400–$900 depending on distance from the panel and local labor rates. Because this cost is identical for both paths, it doesn't change the kit-vs-build decision but it's worth budgeting up front, since it's the line item people forget to price until the quote arrives.

If you want to skip the electrical circuit entirely, a wood-burning heater is the only true off-grid option. That's a different build and maintenance commitment than an electric sauna, and worth its own comparison.

Why we chose a kit

We had the tools and the skill to build from scratch. We priced both paths seriously before deciding. The total cost came out close enough that it wasn't the deciding factor. The kit didn't save us real money over sourcing the materials ourselves.

What it saved was decision fatigue and time. A kit means someone has already solved the vapor barrier placement, the panel dimensions, and the heater sizing for the enclosure you're building. We could spend our weekends on the parts of the project we actually wanted to think about including layout, siting, the ritual of building it instead of re-deriving wall assembly from first principles.

If cost had come out meaningfully lower for the scratch build, we'd have gone that direction. It didn't, so ease won.

When a scratch build is the better call

  • You need a shape or size a kit doesn't offer; an odd footprint, an attached structure, a window placement a manufacturer won't accommodate.

  • You already have quality cedar or thermo-spruce on hand or at a strong price through a lumber contact.

  • You want a wood-burning heater and an off-grid build with no electrical run at all.

  • The process itself is part of what you want from the project, not just the sauna at the end of it.
